Fornacette

Fornacette is the only hamlet of Calcinaia in the province of Pisa.

During the period from 10th century to 12th century began the production of tiles. The name maybe descend by Fornacelle, It’s means “little furnaces. According to historian Emanuele Repetti the hamlet had the name of Alfiano.

In 1567 the grand duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de’ Medici command the construction of a moat of the River Arno in Fornacette, the ancient “Arnaccio”, It been in operation until 1761 and than it was filled for the construction of the street. The hydraulic work also acted as a link channel between Pontedera and Livorno.
